Geek-Chic Trendsetters: Two of the Freshest Geeks I Follow
Yeah! I like that! GEEKSTERS!
geek·ster /ɡēkstir/ noun , informal 1. a fashionable or socially skillful person. 2. a snappy dresser who dares to be wild & different from the norm. 3. Geek + Trendsetter = Geekster, someone who engages in or discuss geek chic-related fashions obsessively or with great attention to aesthetic value & detail.
Today, I want to express my adoration for 2 of my favorite Geeksters that I follow on Instagram.
Their sense of styles are totally amazing!!! But check them out for yourself.
I asked them both some personal questions about their individual love of fashion and how that correlates to geek culture in their everyday lives.
So... Ladies first.
Full Name: Samantha Hargrove
Where are you from: Dallas, Texas, USA
Social Media handles: @alixepractice
Hobbies: Blogging, painting, and reading! I have a slight obsession with any HP fanfic that has a morally grey theme going on. I'm also soon to attempt to reread the ASOIAF series even though I think I might be too busy for that right now.
Tell me a little about yourself. Your everyday life, what you do for fun, what are you passionate about? I'm actually a very busy person these days. Right now I home school my daughter, run two stores, blog, and run social media for @vacancyroad, @strutonbishop, and @espumosocaffe. When I'm trying to have fun, I get my friends together and we have slumber parties where we listen to all of our old favorites (MCR, FOB, The Starting Line...) and drink and eat a ton! I'm not one for going out as I have awful social anxiety, so it's nice to stay in with my close friends.
Have you always had a sense of style about yourself or were you a late bloomer when it came to setting your personal style? I think I've always had a sense of how I wanted to look and who I wanted to be, I just don't think I managed to pull it off until I got into my twenties and gained the confidence to put outfits together and feel good about them.
What influences your style selections? I'd say that, as I'm in retail and it's important trends do have an impact on my style selections. It's interesting to see how things like visible socks are so popular right now, when years ago I would get mocked for trying to style with a visible sock. But above all, I want to be comfortable. I'll ditch something beautiful because it's not comfortable to eat an actual meal in.
What are the names of some of your favorite places to shop or do you make your own pieces? I get all of my eyewear from eyebuydirect! They have a ton of styles that aren't super expensive. https://www.eyebuydirect.com I do a bit of shopping at ASOS and H&M, but the bulk of my shopping is done at Strut or Vacancy Road. https://www.shopstrut.com http://m.asos.com http://m.hm.com/us
Tell me about when you found your love for clothing/fashion. What is it about looking amazing (because you do) made you gravitate to the lifestyle of a Fashionista? I think it all goes back to getting any first job in retail as a teen. Being around clothing was inspiring to me, and the accessibility definitely helped. I started blogging at the end of last year after I helped a customer put together what was essentially an entire wardrobe and realized that I could give advice to people on a much broader platform by breaking down my outfits.
What would you wear on a night out to your local pub or bar with friends? That's easy, jeans, striped tank, leather jacket with tons of pins from KrystanSaintCat and Procrastinate! Music Traitors, and a black pointed ankle boot. Cuff the jeans to look like a tried a bit more than I really did.
What would you wear to a huge house party? I have this great mock neck black and white striped dress with a dolphin hem that is pretty short that I love to wear when I'm doing something fun! BUT paired with converse and socks because dancing is hard work and someone at some point WILL spill beer on your shoes.
What would you wear on a Dream Date with your favorite celebrity or character from your favorite movie, story or comic book? What is that person's name? Ahhh I'm going to have to go all sorts of fangirl here and say Avan Jogia! As for the dream date- just take me somewhere with lots of coffee and really good pastries, please. The outfit would likely be me favorite button up blouse, black trousers, black belt with gold detailing, and my favorite black BC mules. And depending on the weather, a nice longline cardigan.
If you had the keys to your favorite clothing stores, and could get everything for free, what stores would your raid? Ok but, Oak + Fort for sure. I've yet to purchase from them but I love their Instagram so much! I feel the same way about Runway Bandits. And then of course H&M because I love their suit pants.
And last but not least, I present for your entertainment...
Full Name: Mitch Dastardly
Where are you from: Seattle, Wa
Social Media handle: @yourpalmitch
Hobbies: Collecting Movie/comic collectables, Traveling, Gaming, Anything to do with the ocean (sailing, diving, surfing, etc.), hiking & camping, exploring new places, and drinking...lots of drinking.
Tell me a little about yourself. Your everyday life, what you do for fun, what are you passionate about? Always looking for a new adventure and new experiences. I have an addiction for places I have never been and people I have never met.
Have you always had a sense of style about yourself or were you a late bloomer when it came to setting your personal style? Always had my own style and It's always evolving. This isn't even my final form.
What influences your style selections? Growing up a blerd, street style and geek culture influence most of my style. I also like to challenge myself to rock styles that put me out of my comfort zone.
What are the names of some of your favorite places to shop or do you make your own pieces? It varies wildly everything from basic stuff from Amazon, H&M, express, or Forever 21 to niche homegrown designers. I am a HUGE advocate of small designers on etsy, shopify and redbubble.
Tell me about when you found your love for clothing/fashion. What is it about looking amazing (because you do) made you gravitate to the lifestyle of a Fashionista? I grew up on DBZ and was always fascinated with the way the characters would evolve and change their form and look in the pursuit of perfection. That stuck with me and I try to do the real life version of that. Not to impress others but myself.
What would you wear on a night out to your local pub or bar with friends? Same thing i would wear any other day. Could be a dope hoodie or low-key designer geek themed tee or blazer and a tie.
What would you wear to a huge house party? I don't really change my style for the venue. I wear whatever inspires me. Sometimes that means being overdressed sometimes under but my focus is to dress for me, what makes me feel confident, not for who may see me.
What would you wear on a Dream Date with your favorite celebrity or character from your favorite movie, story or comic book? What is that person's name? Wow, that's a good question. If i could go on a date with any celeb it would probably be Adele, unexpected I know but I got a bad thing for chubby cute/thick girls and besides that I think she would be fun af to hang with and super chill. Plus I am a sucker for an English accent and the red hair doesn't hurt As for outfits I would rock a seersucker suit with a nautical print shirt and blue tie with white birds and an English laundry tie-bar in the shape of a rose. When out in public with someone as fine as her I'd have to look at least half as good. As for fictional characters I would love to date a grown up version of Mabel from Gravity Falls. I saw a fan pic of her as an adult and fell in love. I was a lot like her when I was a kid and you never really grow out of that type of crazy. I would rock something like a members only jacket with a Bill Cypher OBEY tee. I think she would respect the irony of that.
If you had the keys to your favorite clothing stores, and could get everything for free, what stores would your raid? 90% of my clothes come from online stores but I would wreck Footlocker, Nike store, and the Adidas store. I got a bad thing for dope kicks.
I truly hope that these guys have inspired you to find your passion for geek fashion!
Because you can be you & love what you love. And incorporate that into your everyday styles.
